Kevin

Hi again.

Today, in the English class, we learned about understanding a text, and the text chosen is "Kevin" by Catherine Lim. This is a very interesting story, and here is my personal opinion about the story.

Being a parent is not an easy thing to do. Kevin’s story is just an ordinary phenomenon in parenting. Most of the parent would like their children to be the best, almost perfect than the other kids. Personally, I don’t like the way Kevin’s mother treat him. She is kind of pushy and wants everything perfect for his son, not concerning about her son feeling. She is also has the quality of perfectionist, doesn't even like repeating a mistakes and a very determine mother. For example, Kevin is very tired after studying 4 chapters of his Science subject, but her mother keep pushing him to continue his studying until chapter 8.  As the only child, Kevin would do everything he asked to do although it kills him inside. He can hardly say no to her mother. Kevin just accept everything she gives, like the story books which he doesn't like at all, a pair of sneakers instead of football boots and he also doesn't allowed to watch football.

In my opinion, being a parent doesn't make you have the power to tell your kids what to do and what they can't do. Being a parent is about listening and understanding your children, and be a friend to them, so that they feel so comfortable with the parents. Tolerance between parents and the children will make a strong bond, and of course a happy life. In Kevin's life for example, the mother is controlling him all the time and Kevin doesn't have a chance to talk back. All he has to do is do as what he's been told. Her mother obviously do it for what she wants, her satisfaction, not for what her son wants. At the end of the day, Kevin didn't really care about her mother who was hospitalized for her ulcers, but planned to spend one week of freedom without his "tiger mom" around.  I realized that her mother do it all for the good sake, but it is too hard to take. Kevin supposed to enjoy his life as the other children do.

Personally, I am impressed with this beautiful story which opens my eyes wide that they are so many people with different characteristics out there. The story which is about unusual love a mother gives to her son, can seldom happen, yet it happen for real in real life.

If you have never been hated by your child you have never been a parent. If your children look up to you, you've made a success of life’s biggest job.” - Bette Davis-
